Celina City Schools Building Project Continues to Progress

The design of the future Celina Elementary School building is complete. The building, which will include a new 115,000-square-foot addition to the existing Celina Intermediate School building, will serve pre-kindergarten through 6th-grade students.

Celina City Schools’ Board of Education passed a resolution March 3, 2023, to proceed with the next phase of construction. Peterson Construction Company, the construction manager, recently solicited bids from qualified subcontractors on multiple bid packages to construct the future elementary building. Despite predicted construction market volatility concerns, the subcontractor bid results came in under budget, and after close evaluation, the district was able to approve several alternative items. Garmann Miller, the architectural/engineering firm of record, worked closely with the district and other project partners throughout design to ensure the district’s building needs were met while staying fiscally conservative with the design.

According to Glen Renner, Peterson’s project manager, several of the subcontractors are local construction companies that are excited to be a part of this monumental building project, which is co-funded by the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission. Similarly, Phil Metz, facilities director for Celina City Schools, said the district is ecstatic about the recent subcontractor bid results and the ability to proceed with the next phase of construction.

From a schedule standpoint, construction of the new addition of the Celina Elementary School building is scheduled to start in the next few weeks, during which concrete footings will begin to take shape. The new building addition is anticipated for completion in the summer of 2024, when partial occupancy will occur. Renovations of the existing Celina Intermediate School building will continue through the fall of 2024. Abatement and demolition of the existing West Building will occur in the spring and summer of 2025, and all remaining site construction will be completed prior to the start of school in 2025. Design of the future Celina High School/Middle School building will begin this spring after a series of education visioning sessions with district stakeholders and project partners. Garmann Miller is planning several meetings with staff and teachers to better understand the needs for their respective rooms and spaces. This new Celina High School/Middle School building, which will serve grade levels 7th grade through 12th grade students, will be located on the existing Celina Primary School and Celina High School campus. Construction is on track to begin in summer 2024 and is anticipated to be completed in the summer of 2026.
